Summer Course Content:

1) Essential Mathematics Course

This course is intended for children who have not completely mastered the basic elements of mathematics required for 11+ success.

It focuses on the connection between number, decimals, fractions, percentages and ratios.

This is essential learning for the GL Assessment style 11+ Maths tests in Buckinghamshire and the Slough Consortium in Berkshire and other grammar school tests across the country.

There will be a multiple-choice mock examination and follow-up session on the last day of the Essential Maths course. A personalised progress report will also be provided.

2) Verbal Reasoning, Non-verbal Reasoning & Technical English Course

The course covers all the essential elements required for Verbal Reasoning, Non-verbal reasoning and technical English required by the Berks and Bucks 11+ examinations and other grammar examinations across the country.

This course is recommended for children who are not fully competent in what is required for the 11+ examinations.

The following areas will be covered:

  • Technical English

Technical English comprises comprehension; spelling and vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and syntax in 11+ tests.

  • Verbal Reasoning

Verbal Reasoning comprises: basic logical/processing techniques in GL Assessment and other styles of VR tests.

  • Non-Verbal Reasoning

This will cover all the techniques required by GL Assessment and other non-verbal tests.

There will be two multiple choice mock examinations and a follow-up session on the last day of the Verbal and Non-verbal Reasoning course. A personalised progress report will also be provided.

3) Advanced English Course

This is an advanced course and should be considered if children are facing a specific English examination in the 11+. It can also be a useful means of boosting a child’s English skills to a much higher level and making a pass score more likely in the GL Assessment and similar 11+ tests. If your child is sitting for a top-performing grammar school this is excellent additional learning that can further enhance their performance.

The course comprises the following:

  • Creative writing, where children will write a number of stories and redraft each one during the course. Children’s English improves when they learn to use language creatively.
  • Extensive test practice and instruction in comprehension skills. This will involve close study of prose and poetry.
  • Technical English components designed to improve the children’s grammar, syntax, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary skills.
  • Extra full-length test practice materials designed to reinforce learning.

The mock examination will include a grammar, syntax, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation and comprehension (multiple-choice) test and a creative writing (written) test and a follow-up session on the last day of the course. A personalised progress report will also be provided.

4) Advanced Mathematics Course

This is a challenging course and it should be considered if children are facing a specific mathematics examination in the 11+. It can also be a useful means of improving a child’s mathematics skills even further so they can perform above the level of the required tests. It should be considered if your child is sitting for a top-performing grammar school.  It is also useful in boosting performance in GL Assessment style 11+ and similar 11+ examinations.

The course comprises the following:

  • Coverage of algebra and mathematical instruments. At the end of the course children will be fully versed with algebra and even be able to do simultaneous equations and effectively make use of mathematical instruments.
