A Parent Checklist: What to Look for When Choosing 11+ Tuition

11+ preparation is not tuition to approach casually or leave to chance. Taking time to research your options carefully helps ensure your child receives preparation that builds not only exam readiness, but the confidence and skills needed to succeed long after the 11+ is over.

Before committing to any 11+ tuition, parents should take time to ask the right questions. Not all preparation is equal, and the approach you choose can make a significant difference to your child’s confidence and readiness.

Teaching & Expertise

  • Are sessions taught by an experienced, qualified teacher?
  • Does the tutor have extensive 11+ experience to prepare a child for the 11+ exams?
  • Does the tutor have an up-to-date DBS certificate?

Course Structure & Progression

  • Is there a learning structure built on a strong methodology for each session?
  • Is there a clear progression plan throughout the course, rather than ad hoc sessions each week?
  • Does the course begin early enough to build skills gradually?

Support Beyond Content

  • Does the tuition help children develop confidence, organisation, time management and exam technique, not just subject knowledge?
  • Is enjoyment of learning actively encouraged?
  • Do you have access to pre-recorded sessions to revisit any sessions when needed?

Feedback & Communication

  • Are parents given regular feedback on progress and areas for improvement?
  • Is there clear communication so you understand how your child is developing?
  • Are you invited to the weekly sessions to observe the teaching, find out more about the homework, and ask questions of the teacher at the end of the session?

Materials & Hidden Costs

  • Are all learning materials included?
  • Can you spread the cost of the tuition and leave at any time?
  • Are expectations and fees transparent from the outset?

For AE Tuition, the answer to every question above is YES. Our carefully developed teaching approach brings together experienced teachers, a proven methodology, structured progression, inclusive materials and clear communication with parents.

We support children with far more than exam knowledge. We build confidence, resilience, organisation skills, time management, focus and a love of learning. Our dedication to supporting children beyond the 11+ exams is why, for over 35 years, tens of thousands of pupils have successfully progressed through the 11+ and into the next stage of their education with confidence.

Thinking about enrolling on a course? Is there a concern that is stopping you?

I couldn't enrol on the session I wanted for my child
We understand that family schedules can be hectic so it can be challenging to find the perfect group for your child to attend their weekly sessions. We recommend enrolling in a group that best fits your current schedule. This way, you can join waiting lists for any fully booked sessions. If a place becomes available in a group you're waitlisted for, we will contact you directly to see if you would like your child to switch groups.
Courses are too expensive
We understand that paying for the course in full can be challenging. That's why we offer interest-free standing order payments, allowing you to spread the cost over monthly instalments throughout the duration of the course.
There isn't a tuition centre near me
We're delighted that parents want to enrol their child nationwide and even worldwide on our courses. This is why we offer remote courses for our pupils to login to their weekly sessions from anywhere.

It doesn't matter if a child is enrolled on a remote course or a classroom-based course, our methodology stays the same. Pupils who attend our remote-learning courses will experience the same high standard of tuition, provided by experienced, UK-qualified teachers who have also been trained to deliver AE Tuition's specialised programmes.
I'm concerned that there will be too much work for my child
We understand that parents may be concerned about their child's workload. Please be reassured we are here to support both you and your child every step of the way. We take pride in our unique partnership between pupils, parents and teachers, which ensures open communication. If you ever feel that your child is struggling, we strongly encourage you to speak with their teacher or a member of our teaching team as soon as possible so that we can address the issue immediately.
I'm confused which course I need to enrol my child on
We offer a range of courses for children aged 7 to 15 years, and we understand the importance of choosing the right one for your child. If you need assistance, please feel free to contact our Customer Service team by filling in the contact form or calling us on 020 8867 2727 (Mon-Fri, 09:00 to 14:30).
Class size is not right for my child
Each class has up to 24 pupils in a class (up to 18 pupils for groups in Feltham and our remote courses). We believe that tuition should be taught by teachers. This is why each course is taught by UK-qualified, experienced teachers trained to deliver AE Tuition’s specialised programmes. During each session, pupils receive expert tuition from the teacher in the main classroom. Individual support dealing with problems resulting from the homework review are dealt with by trained assistants under the direction supervisors.
