Five habits to develop strong readers

It’s easy to assume that top-performing children simply ‘work harder,’ however from our teaching experience at schools and AE Tuition, that’s not the full story.

Our stronger 11+ pupils don’t just commit themselves to working hard, they build strong reading habits which then becomes a life skill they enjoy. These reading habits are ideal to be developed at home, with the support from parents.

Here are our five key habits to encourage your child to become a strong reader

  1. Reading little and often creates a big impact

Strong readers don’t rely on last-minute effort; they build consistency of reading for around 15-20 minutes a day as part of their routine (e.g. before bedtime or after school). This becomes a no pressure routine to give them space to enjoy what they are reading. Children who read more frequently build vocabulary, comprehension and confidence naturally over time. So, if your child struggles to read for a long period of time, swap the routine to more frequent but less duration.

  1. Reading a variety of texts

Top pupils don’t just stick to one type of book. They mix fiction (for imagination) with non-fiction (for knowledge and vocabulary), articles, comics, instructions, even subtitles.

Exposure to different styles strengthens comprehension skills, a key requirement for 11+ exams. Encourage your child to explore topics they already love (sports, animals, space); this will encourage them to want to read more.

  1. Reading for understanding, not just speed

You’ve probably experienced your child rushing their reading and not really absorbing the text they have read. It’s important that children pause to think about what they have read, ask questions and re-read tricky sections. This is something we encourage our parents to get involved with at home. Developing curious reading is a life skill that will help them to excel.

Here are some example questions:

  • “What do you think will happen next?”
  • “Why do you think they did that?”
  • “How do you think the character feels?”
  1. Reading with a choice of books and taking ownership

Children are far more likely to read when they feel in control of what they read and when they like to read. Giving them the independence to choose their own reading material that matches their interests will make sure that reading feels like fun and not schoolwork.

  1. Reading yourself

If a child sees you reading, it helps them understand that reading is a normal and valued part of everyday life. Children naturally copy the behaviours they see, so when they observe you choosing to read, it shows them that it isn’t just something they have to do for school, but something people do for enjoyment and learning. By modelling this habit, you gently encourage your child to pick up a book themselves, building their confidence and interest in reading in a natural and positive way. Also, it helps you to step away from life and enjoy a good book.

Thinking about enrolling on a course? Is there a concern that is stopping you?

I couldn't enrol on the session I wanted for my child
We understand that family schedules can be hectic so it can be challenging to find the perfect group for your child to attend their weekly sessions. We recommend enrolling in a group that best fits your current schedule. This way, you can join waiting lists for any fully booked sessions. If a place becomes available in a group you're waitlisted for, we will contact you directly to see if you would like your child to switch groups.
Courses are too expensive
We understand that paying for the course in full can be challenging. That's why we offer interest-free standing order payments, allowing you to spread the cost over monthly instalments throughout the duration of the course.
There isn't a tuition centre near me
We're delighted that parents want to enrol their child nationwide and even worldwide on our courses. This is why we offer remote courses for our pupils to login to their weekly sessions from anywhere.

It doesn't matter if a child is enrolled on a remote course or a classroom-based course, our methodology stays the same. Pupils who attend our remote-learning courses will experience the same high standard of tuition, provided by experienced, UK-qualified teachers who have also been trained to deliver AE Tuition's specialised programmes.
I'm concerned that there will be too much work for my child
We understand that parents may be concerned about their child's workload. Please be reassured we are here to support both you and your child every step of the way. We take pride in our unique partnership between pupils, parents and teachers, which ensures open communication. If you ever feel that your child is struggling, we strongly encourage you to speak with their teacher or a member of our teaching team as soon as possible so that we can address the issue immediately.
I'm confused which course I need to enrol my child on
We offer a range of courses for children aged 7 to 15 years, and we understand the importance of choosing the right one for your child. If you need assistance, please feel free to contact our Customer Service team by filling in the contact form or calling us on 020 8867 2727 (Mon-Fri, 09:00 to 14:30).
Class size is not right for my child
Each class has up to 24 pupils in a class (up to 18 pupils for groups in Feltham and our remote courses). We believe that tuition should be taught by teachers. This is why each course is taught by UK-qualified, experienced teachers trained to deliver AE Tuition’s specialised programmes. During each session, pupils receive expert tuition from the teacher in the main classroom. Individual support dealing with problems resulting from the homework review are dealt with by trained assistants under the direction supervisors.
I have another reason why I haven't enrolled my child yet...
